What are HERO Points (HP)?

HERO Points are awarded by school administrators who roam the school between the periods to reward good behavior, such as wearing their student ID.  With mobile scanners at the ready, our administrators scan the barcode on the student ID to award the points.  Each year, the student starts off with 100 points.  As the year goes by, students exhibiting positive behaviors and “Viking Pride” will be able to accumulate many points, and if they wish, spend it for something awesome!  Students can also lose points for infractions to school rules, such as tardies.

WHAT ARE SOME Opportunities AVAILABLE to Gain HPs?

  • Wearing of school lanyard and student ID card = award of 1 HP
  • Participation in School Dress Up & Spirit Days = award of 1 HP
  • Participation in SA rallies and events = award of 1 HP
  • Having breakfast or lunch at the school cafeteria = award of 1 HP
  • Attendance to particular school/athletic events = award of 1 HP
  • Caught Doing Good / Viking “Pride” elements = award of 1 HP
  • Attendance to the PTSA Open House with parent/guardian = 10 HP

How else can students use their HPs?

Memories made throughout high school are priceless and will definitely carry on with students throughout their lives.  The following is a list of ways students may utilize their accumulated HPs toward making those special memories.

  • Game Room – Student Activities and Administration are working diligently to finalize a student game room.
    • HPs will be required for students to access this room.
  • Student Lounge
  • Assigned parking privileges
  • Front of Line privilege at cafeteria
  • Redeemed for Gift Cards
  • School Store credit
  • Raffle Tickets for items donated to Hilo High School to support positive behaviors

Class Hero point (ChPs)

While it is great to exhibit Viking Pride as individual students, it is of equal importance to showcase your excellence as an entire class.  Students will work side by side with their classmates in the classrooms, on athletic teams, and on many other projects throughout their years in high school.  Classes will be awarded HPs based on competitions such as spirit cheers and participation in student dress up days.

The class with the most accumulated Class Hero Points (CHPs) will be honored with “The Viking Sword”!
For the 2016-2017 School Year, winning the Viking Sword will include an end of the year surprise to be announced at a later time.

School-wide Events that require a minimum of 70 HPs for participation

In addition to having paid their student fees, students must have a minimum of 70 HPs in order to participate in the following events:

  • Winterball
  • Jr. Prom
  • Senior Prom
  • Homecoming Dance
  • Other Dances

Using HERO at school events

Safety is our number one concern when it comes to internal or external school events. To keep track of students who enter our event, we use HERO to scan them in AND out using their student ID. Using HERO, we now have an accurate record keeping system of all students in attendance.  We can also use HERO to ensure that only students with parental/guardian authorization are allowed to attend.  We are making it a requirement to have students bring with them their Student ID when attending school events.

HERO and Tardies

Uh-oh! The tardy bell has rung, and you did not make it to class on time.  Per HHS policy, you must receive a tardy slip in order to be allowed into class.  Students may approach any security guard with a mobile scanner and printer to receive a tardy slip.  Security will be stationed around campus to ensure that students can receive a tardy pass in an expedited fashion, minimizing time outside of class.  Each tardy occurrence deducts 10 HPs from the student’s account.  On your fifth tardy of the school year, an automatic referral to your counselor is created, in addition to the removal of points.  This will occur until their eighth tardy of the school year, where  you are given an automatic referral to administration for every reoccurring tardy and a Chapter 19, Class C Offense for Insubordination.

How can students check their HERO activity and balance? Can parents keep track too?

Each student and parent is assigned an activation code to access the HERO portal on any computer, smartphone or tablet. Both students and parents can create an account to keep track of their HERO activity. Parent resources: https://herok12.com/resource/playbook/playbook-parent-student-engagement-tools
