Aloha Vikings! My name is Tammi and here are your announcements.

Here’s What’s Happening Today Vikings:

Honoring Princess Ruth Keʻelikōlani

Aloha kākou!  Today is a special day.  It is the lā hānau (or birthday) of High Chiefess Ruth Keʻelikōlani. Great granddaughter of Kamehameha the first, she was once considered the richest woman in Hawaiʻi, who upon her death, bequeathed her vast amount of land to her cousin, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop.  Keʻelikōlani was a strong-willed woman who believed in Hawaiian traditions.  Although she could understand and speak English well, she refused to and would only speak Hawaiian.  Those who could not speak Hawaiian, would need to use an interpreter.  This is one of the reasons that the Hawaiian language community honors her as a hero and true advocate for our mother tongue. Join the Hawaiian language classes during a lunchtime rally today in front of the auditorium as they honor our Princess Ruth Keʻelikōlani and all that she is and has done for the Hawaiian people.
