Drivers Education
The Driver Education Program is comprised of two courses:
- 38 hours of classroom instruction, and
- Six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction.
The program provides the knowledge and skills of driving which are applied while developing the attitudes and habits of a responsible driver. Content areas include: (1) causes of crashes and their resulting economic, personal and social losses; (2) proper attitudes relative to driving; (3) role of the driver in relation to traffic laws and the physical laws of nature; (4) driving techniques and skills; (5) pedestrian safety; (6) handling adverse conditions and emergency situations; and (7) personal factors that influence a driver's ability (alcohol, drugs, distracted driving, road rage, etc.).
Driver education helps develop safe driving skills and attitudes in students, thereby reducing traffic crashes, deaths, injuries and property damage. It provides a life-long skill that will give mobility to students as they pursue higher secondary education or a career after graduation.
High school and home-schooled students between the ages of 15 and 19 are eligible to enroll in the program. The program is conducted primarily during after school hours, weekends and holidays. A few high schools offer the Driver Education Program as an elective semester course.
