PRE-ROLL: Kindness Week

Good morning, Vikings! My name is Mesida Kansou, and this week from the 14th to the 18th is Kindness Week. Every morning on KVIKS we’ll be sharing a quote. To start it off, the quote of the day is, “Let your smile change the world, but don’t let the world change your smile.” In other words, be yourself! Remember to smile, spread aloha and be happy. Mahalo, Vikings!

Hawaiian Independence Day

Aloha kākou! ʻO wau o Loke. a ʻO wau o Maluhia This is how  Lā Kūʻokoʻa came to be,  PART 1.

1839, July- French captain Cyrille Laplace arrived in Honolulu to investigate the claims of mistreatment of French Catholics in Hawaiʻi.

Alongside the French army, he made demands of King Kamehameha the third, Kau-ike-ao-uli, and the Hawaiian government.

Under the threat of war, Kamehameha III issued an Edict of Toleration and paid $20,000 to the French Government in compensation.

This incident made Kamehameha III aware of the distressing and humiliating position of his government.

This would set in motion his strategic plan to gain international recognition of the great powers of the world at that time.

Stay tuned tomorrow when we share PART 2 in the history of Lā Kūʻokoʻa.  Alooha!
