The Faculty and Staff of Hilo High School encourages all HHS Viking graduates to participate in their first ever "Graduate Drive Through Event" on May 22, 2020, from 3-5pm.
As with most schools throughout the country, Hilo High School's traditional commencement ceremony was cancelled this year due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Although it is not the way our Class of 2020 expected to graduate, this is truly the most unique commencement in Hilo High School's history.
"We look forward to seeing them for one final time as our students", quoted one teacher. "We'll give them a virtual hug and shout out Congratulations as we normally do at the end of commencement. We will miss them all".
Some highlights about the event:
1 - There shall be no "stationary audience", other than the faculty and staff of Hilo High School and invited guests. These people will be spread apart to observe social distancing guidelines and will be wearing masks throughout the event.
2 - Parents and family members who join the graduate in their vehicle (all seat belted) is that graduate's "mobile audience" at the event. No one will be allowed on campus outside of a graduate-containing vehicle. Administration emphasizes the need for public and extended family members to not attempt to park around or enter onto the school campus.
3 - Throwing items from the vehicles is not permitted at anytime.
4 - The purpose of the event is to "walk the line" in a non-traditional format to commemorate the accomplishments of our seniors. Misbehavior of any kind will truly tarnish the prestigiousness of Graduation.
To the graduates of the Class of 2020:
We sincerely hope to see you all on May 22.
Reminder to submit your 30-second video clip (directions in your viking email) for your commencement video.
