Mauna Kea Coin Contest Information

The Maunakea Coin Contest is open to all K-12 students of the Big Island. Students are invited to create a design for the 2021 coin, with elements of culture, astronomy (such as night sky, constellations, and telescopes), and nature (such as plants, animals, insects) found on or around Maunakea. Contestants enter in one of three grade categories. Nine category winners and the best overall 3 entries will receive generous prizes from KTA, the Maunakea Observatories, Imiloa Astronomy Center, and other partners.

The prizes for the overall top 3 winners include KTA gift certificates, a gift from the 'Imiloa Astronomy Center, passes for the Galaxy Garden, and the Hawaiian Starlight DVD.

The top winner will see his or her design struck on a coin. A bronze version of the coin will be available for sale, and aluminum coins will be distributed at outreach events in the coming year.
