Viking's First Day of School Guide | SY 21-22 Edition

What day do I start school and what time should I come to campus?
All 9th and 10th graders come to school on Tuesday August 3 and 4th in order to get acclimated to Hilo High School. While everyone including the 11th and 12th graders will attend school on Thursday August 5th and Friday August 6th. The first bell rings at 8:00am so we recommend being at school at least 10 minutes early. See you all then!!

What if I do not have a course schedule and do not know what classes I am taking? How can I get one?
If you are unable to access your Infinite Campus account to view or print a copy of your schedule, please come to the Learning Resource Center on your first day of school between 7:15 - 8:00am and we will have a printed copy for you.
 
Do I need to wear my ID at all times? What if I do not have one?
Yes, it is required for all students and staff to wear their ID everyday for your safety. If you do not have one, please take a picture of yourself with a neutral background and submit to the photo ID request form on the Hilo High School website and we will make sure your ID is ready for pickup in the Learning Resource Center on your first day of school from 7:15- 8:00am.
 
Does Hilo High require uniforms? If not, what should I wear?
Hilo High does not require uniforms. Please refer to our dress code to see what is appropriate to wear to school.
 
If I do not like my class schedule, can I change my classes?
Any class schedule changes MUST go through your counselor so you should make an appointment to talk with them.
 
Where are the bathrooms located?
Girls and Boys Restrooms located at Building C Breezeway (Closed at end of school day)
Girls and Boys Restrooms located at Building Q (Cafeteria students dining room)
Girls and Boys Restrooms located at Building B 1st Floor
Girls and Boys Restrooms located at Building BB 2nd Floor
Girls and Boys Restrooms located at Building E (outside of the LRC), (Open after school ONLY).
Multiple-User General Restrooms are open for general use during school hours.
 
If I want to join a club or sports team, what do I need to do?
During your first days at school you will be provided with the names and information about clubs and sports teams with the names and emails of their advisors and/or coaches. Please refer to the list and email the coach or advisor to learn more about when and what you need to do to become a member of their program.

If I do not want to eat breakfast or lunch, where do I go to hangout?
Students can spend their free time before school and during lunch in the Learning Resource Center, patios, or teacher’s classrooms.
 
After I get dropped off by the bus or my parents in the morning, where do I go?
Students can go to the cafeteria for breakfast, hangout on the patio, Learning Resource Center, or teachers’ classrooms open for students.
 
Do we have to wear a mask while in school both inside the classroom and outside? Do we have
to social distance?
Masks must be worn in the classroom, but it is recommended that you wear your mask at all times. We also highly recommend that you social distance, maintaining at least 3 feet between you and your peers.
 
Is there still FREE breakfast and lunch? Where and how much do we need to pay?
Lunch and breakfast are now free for ALL students.
 
How can we tell if we have even periods or odd periods? What about on Fridays?
Mondays and Wednesdays are always even periods and Tuesdays and Thursdays are always odd periods. Fridays alternate every other week between even periods and odd periods. Mondays are even periods, but with STARS added, the day is a little longer.
 
What is the best way to get information about what is happening at Hilo High School?
There are many ways to get information including to visiting our website which always has the most current information or having your parent subscribe to the family newsletter. You should listen every morning to the KVIKS TV morning bulletin which shares important information on YouTube. Information is also available on our social media sites.

If I want to purchase Hilo High merchandise, where should I go or who do I talk to?
The Viking Spirit Store has an online store. Please visit our website to view what we have for sale. You can also come during lunch or after school to A-16 if you want to check out our merchandise . The store sells everything from stickers to shirts to masks to hoodies to towels to lanyards and much more.
 
Is there a club for the LGBTQ+ community? What are you doing to meet the needs of this group of young people?
Hilo High is offering a Gay Straight Alliance Club on campus as it is part of a national organization which includes Social, Support and Activist GSA activities for members by providing a place to connect with each other, working to create safe places and talk about issues and taking the leadership role in improving our school climate by raising awareness and change practices in our school.

What do I need to bring on the first day of school?
Hilo High does not have a school supplies list, however, make sure to bring something to write with!

Check the website for our staff directory and they will either answer your question or refer you to the right person who will be able to assist you.
