Good morning Vikings! Thank you for voting for your 2021 Homecoming Court! As announced yesterday over the PA, here are the results of the 2021-2022 Homecoming Court.

Hilo High Pride Empowerment Club

October is LGBTQ+ History Month, and October 11 is National Coming Out Day! It's a perfect time to just be brave and be yourself. Make new friends and positive vibes! The Hilo High Pride Empowerment Club invites EVERYONE to come to club meetings. Straight friends and allies are welcome too! Meetings are held every Thursday at lunch recess in Ms. Crowl's room, R-21.

Leo Club

Attention all new and returning LEO club members! Please come to  A-19, Ms. Tanaka's room to pick up and drop off your forms and club dues. Club dues are $11. As a reminder, we will be having a beach clean-up at Onekahakaha Beach Park this Saturday, October 9th from 9-10am. Supplies will be provided but be sure not to forget a mask and a water bottle. See you there!


Class of 2024 T-Shirts

Attention Class of 2024 Phoenixes! Your class shirts are in! Please come to Mr. Yamamoto's Room, B-44 (2nd Floor of B-Building) starting Wednesday October 6 through Friday October 8  during lunch ONLY. If you did not purchase a shirt, we have a few extra. This year's shirt is $10 and we have a few extra from last year going for $5. First come, first serve. If you have any questions or if you don't know if you bought one, please see Mr. Yamamoto in B44.

Attention Juniors! Your class shirts are ready for pick up! Come to Ms. Switzer's class room B-45 any day during lunch for pick up!

If you are a Senior this year, and understand another language other than English, you should consider applying for the Seal of Biliteracy.


What is the Seal of Biliteracy?

The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by the Hawai‘i State Department of Education (HIDOE) in recognition of students who have demonstrated a high level of proficiency in English and at least one additional language by high school graduation.


Seal of Biliteracy Honorees will receive: 

A medal - which can be worn at the graduation ceremony

A certificate

Seal of Biliteracy added to the transcript

 

Fun fact: 

Between January 2017 and December 2018, how many job postings in Hawai‘i had a bilingual or proficiency in an additional language requirement?


Answer: 21,212 jobs!


Here are the requirements:

To receive the Seal of Biliteracy, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a graduating senior enrolled in a Hawai‘i public or charter school
  • Demonstrate a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA upon graduation.
  • Successfully complete courses required for English Language Arts for a high school graduation diploma with a minimum 3.0 GPA upon graduation
  • Attain the requisite score for one or more of the world language proficiency assessments.

PTP Workshops

Seniors, do you need help finishing your PTP? Please come to the LRC TODAY during Lunch and join the PTP Workshop. The PTP is a half credit required for graduation. There is no need to sign up, just have your school ID with you and come in! If we work on it together, you can get it done!


FAFSA

Aloha Class of 2022!  The FAFSA application is now open, as well as the Kamehameha Schools College Scholarship Application! Everyone planning to attend college next year has created your F-S-A-I-D, as well as helped your parent or guardian to create theirs.  Please see Mrs. Frias if you have any questions about the application or financial aid process along the way.  Let's finish the 

first -quarter strong, seniors!


Early Childhood Education

Hawai‘i Community College is offering a new opportunity for high school students to pursue college credentials and careers in the field of Early Childhood Education. There's a new opportunity for Hilo High School students who are interested in pursuing college credentials and careers in the field of Early Childhood Education. The new program is called the “Hilo Early Learning Career Pathway Project.” It will allow students to earn a Certificate of Competence from Hawai‘i CC’s Early Childhood Education program while they are still in high school. The classes will be free and the program includes paid internships for eligible seniors. Interested students should talk to their college and career counselors.



LRC

Attention Vikings! The Learning Resource Center (LRC) also known as the library is open for students.The LRC is open during morning, first recess and lunch.  ID’s will be required for entry. In addition, the Hilo High School Student Credit Union will open on Tuesdays and Fridays during lunch at the LRC. And beginning next week, it will be open everyday during LUNCH at the LRC.  So come visit us and open an account with our Hilo High School Student Credit Union, where you could do your banking on campus.
