PRE-ROLL: Kindness Week

Good Morning Vikings! My name is Caroline Jung and in honor of Hilo High School’s Kindness Week, I would like to share today’s kindness quote with you. Today’s quote is, “Sometimes it takes only one act of kindness and caring to change a person’s life.” Remember to treat your peers, teachers, and those around you with kindness and respect because no act of kindness no matter how big or small goes unappreciated. Have a great day, and happy kindness week!

Hawaiian Independence Day

Aloha kākou! ʻO wau ʻo Alohalani .

a ʻO wau o Xiah. This is how  Lā Kūʻokoʻa came to be,  PART 3.

In 1843, after numerous meetings, the 3 envoys- Richards, Haʻalilio & Simpson, received assurance from Great Britain, France and Belgium of their countriesʻ willingness to acknowledge Hawaiian Independence.

However, while away, British naval captain, Lord George Paulet, illegally occupied Hawaiʻi without the approval of his superiors.  Paulet destroyed all Hawaiian flags that he could find and raised the British union jack flag in its place.  This occupation lasted for six months.

On July 31, 1843, British Admiral Richard Thomas returned the kingdom back to Kamehameha III.  That day became known as a Hawaiian holiday known as Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea marking the hoʻihoʻi or restoration of Hawaiʻiʻs EA or sovereignty.

Stay tuned tomorrow when we share PART 4  in the history of Lā Kūʻokoʻa.  Alooha!
