Quality vision care is an important component of education; students that cannot see often struggle to learn to read, to see the board, and to succeed academically. In the coming month, Hawaii Department of Education (HIDOE), in coordination with nonprofit providers Project Vision Hawaii (PVH) and Vision To Learn (VTL), will offer FREE vision screenings, eye exams, and, prescription glasses to student as needed.

The vision program consists of two parts:

1. Free vision screening using an eye chart and autorefractor, coordinated by PVH.
2. If your child does not pass the initial screening, VTL will provide a trained and licensed optometrist to perform a vision exam on your child. Glasses will be prescribed and fitted if needed.

Following the vision exam, if your child needs glasses he/she will have the opportunity to pick from a variety of frames, and glasses will be ordered for your child. The vision exam and eyeglasses are available to all students who need them, with no out-of-pocket cost to parents or children.

VTL’s vision exam is designed to prescribe glasses to children who need them; it is not a replacement for a comprehensive eye exam. The exam is noninvasive; no eye drops will be administered, and the child’s eye will not be touched.

Student Information for Vision Services
HIDOE will share your child’s name, date of birth, grade, mailing address, phone number, and vision screening information with VTL which will be stored in a secure student health record system. No student educational or health data shall be used for the purposes outside the scope of this partnership with HIDOE.

MedQuest Reimbursement: Vision services and glasses are provided at no cost to you. Receiving vision services provided by VTL will constitute a routine vision examination and-as-needed-fitting of glasses and eyeglasses may be billed to your child’s MedQuest benefits. However, please note that the eye exam and eyeglasses will be provided even if MedQuest cannot be billed.
