Good Morning Vikings! This is your K-V-I-K-S News Bulletin for Monday, November 13th, 2023. I’m Tyra. The periods today are 2, STARS, 4 and 6.




Attendance Challenge (11/13/23-11/13/23)

Aloha Vikings!  Here's the Attendance Challenge standings for the week of Oct 30th-Nov 3rd:


4th Place:  Academy of Construction and Engineering with 89.11%

3rd Place:  Freshman Academy with 89.24%

2nd Place:  Academy of Business and Natural Resources with 89.66%

1st Place:  Academy of Health and Human Services with 91.04%


This is the middle of the 2nd quarter and we could all use some improvement.  Let's do our best to get to school on time, and make it to each class on time throughout the day.  WE CAN DO IT!


World Kindness Day (11/7/23-11/13/23)

TODAY, Monday, November 13th is World Kindness Day. To celebrate, wear Aloha Attire to promote kindness to all! If you're decked out in the aloha spirit, we'll be giving you a treat and a kind message! Remember to choose kindness every day- and we hope to see all your colorful aloha attire!


During period 4, Elliot Hopkins from the National Federation of High School Athletics will be giving a presentation on hazing and bullying. If you're interested in going, please come to room A-16 to pick up a pass to attend.


Cross Country State Championships (11/13/23-11/14/23)

Hilo High has a STATE CHAMP! Congratulations to Kekai hulali Halpern for winning the cross country individual girls championship last weekend on Oahu. Let’s give her a round of applause, amazing job! Congratulations to the other runners who placed as well, way to fight until the end! GO VIKINGS!


Winter Ball Packet Pick-Up

The Hilo High School 2023 Winter Ball will be hosted on Saturday, December 16, from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM at the new gym. Packet pick-ups will be available starting this week on November 16th, 17th, 21st, and 22nd. If you haven’t already, please check if you are eligible for the dance and have paid all your dues by looking for your name on the list outside of room A-16. Thank you!


Senior Class Announcements(11/8/23-11/13/23)

Seniors!  Today is Monday, November 13th - your Senior Mob Shot Day!  Please start heading down to the New Gym around 9:30am so we can get you all seated with your posters and take a nice class picture.  Teachers and Administrators will be checking to make sure all seniors are in Dress Standard, and all posters are appropriate.  See you all at the New Gym!


Meanwhile, Seniors attending Senior Luau will be able to pick up their bids Starting on Monday Nov. 13 through Wednesday Nov. 15 during lunch at Mr. Yamamoto's Room - R.13. No Bid? No Entry! If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Yamamoto.


Diabetes Awareness Day (11/10/23-11/14/23)

November is diabetes awareness month and November 14th is diabetes awareness day. Hawaii has one of the highest populations of people living with diabetes, and every year about 8,000 more people are newly diagnosed. 1 out of 9 adults in Hawai'i have diabetes. Including Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders, and other minorities at greater risk of developing diabetes which puts them at a greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease, stroke, kidney or eye disease and amputation.

Knowing the signs, symptoms, and types of diabetes is vital to living and the management of the disease. Diabetes does not happen just because you eat too much sugar.

Again, November is Diabetes Awareness month, and November 14th is Diabetes Awareness day. Please wear BLUE on this day to support awareness of this disease.


Viking Canned Food Drive(11/13/23-11/22/23)

Thanksgiving is here so now it's time for our Viking Canned Food Drive! It will be taking place from November 8th to the 22nd and will be a COMPETITION between the classes! The class that is able to get the most cans will be pieing an advisor from each of the losing classes in the face- so if you want to donate some canned goods and help your class out, drop your canned goods off in front of room A-16 starting Wednesday, November 8th. Happy Thanksgiving Vikings!


Student Credit Union

Hello Student Credit Union members! We have a meeting TODAY Monday, November 13, 2023 at LUNCH RECESS. We hope to see you there.


Student ID Card (11/8/23-11/14/23)

All students should have a Hilo High School Identification Card on their person at all times while on campus and while attending school functions. One of the most important times to have your Student ID Card is when purchasing any school meal. Not having your ID card causes unnecessary delays at the service lines. New and Replacement Student IDs are currently one dollar for reprints. Head over to the main office during morning or lunch recess to obtain a Student ID card if you don't already have one. 


GEAR UP Manoa and HERO Event (11/9/23-11/16/23)

Happy Holidays!  GEAR UP and the Hero store invites you to B35 for a quick and fun activity where you can earn 10 hero points from Tuesday, November 14th through Friday, November 17th during lunch recess.  To kick off this event, the first 50 students to participate during lunch on the 14th will receive pizza!  We look forward to seeing you there!


VIking Band and Orchestra Fundraiser (11/13/23-11/17/23)

The Hilo High Viking Band and Orchestra will be having a Teapresso fundraiser in the Hilo Intermediate Band parking lot on Saturday, November 18th from 10 am - 2 pm. Come by to grab a drink and support our Viking Music. Since it's the same day as senior luau, seniors- consider getting a drink before getting ready for your night of fun! We hope to see you there!


ASVAB Testing (11/9/23-11/22/23)

All 10th-12th graders, the next ASVAB administration is on Tuesday, November 28th, 2023. The test will be administered in C-215 and will start promptly at 8:10 AM. If you are planning on joining the military post-high school, you will need to take the ASVAB.

Due to COVID-19, the number of test-takers per session has been reduced to 30.

C-215 will be closed all morning on Tuesday, November 28th, 2023 to accommodate the test.


Boys Basketball

Any boys interested in playing Boys Basketball for the upcoming 2023-2024 season, Try-outs will be starting on Monday November 13th, Tuesday November 14, and Wednesday November 15th from 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm at Hilo High New Gym.  Please make sure that your physical papers are turned in and up to date in order to participate. See you there!


College and Career Visitations

Tuesday, November 14th, Pacific University (Oregon), will be visiting at 8:30 during pd.1 While, Washington State University will be visiting during pd.3 at 10:00

JORTC (11/13/23-11/17/23)

Hello, and this is Cadet Major Yoshimura speaking. This is a reminder that we are having a steak ticket fundraiser for JROTC. You can buy a ticket for 4  eight ounce steaks from a JROTC cadet for $25. The pick up date is Saturday, November 19th at the new gym. Remember to bring your ticket with your serial number.
