On 17-18 February 2024, Hilo High School JROTC Viking Battalion hosted a Big Island Challenge with Kealakehe HS, Konawaena HS, Farrington, HS (Oahu), Moanalua HS (Oahu), and Waimea HS (Kauai).
These schools participated in several events to include Armed Regulation Drill, Archery Competition, Color Guard Drill, and Raiders, consisting of eight physical fitness events, ending with a tactical biathlon (1-mile stair run and 400 meter swim). In the end, Farrington won the overall trophy.
