Panorama Survey on August 26, 2024

In order to learn more about student experiences, all students in grades 3-12 will be invited to participate in two different surveys.
  1. Panorama Student Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Survey
  2. Panorama Student Perception Survey (SPS)
Panorama SEL Survey
The Panorama Student SEL Survey will be administered at three points this school year. Your child will be asked to reflect on their own social-emotional learning skills, like self-awareness, growth mindset, and grit. The survey is available for review on the Department’s website: https://www.hawaiipublicschools.org/ConnectWithUs/MediaRoom/PressReleases/Pages/2021-2022-Social-Emotional-Learning-Assessment.aspx

To maintain confidentiality, the online survey responses are transmitted directly to the same survey company for processing. Individual responses will be reported to the school, where principals, counselors, and teachers will use the results to provide support in the development of students’ social-emotional learning skills. Summarized student-response data are reported to the Department’s state and complex area leadership teams, unless otherwise requested.

Panorama Student Perception Survey
Administered once a year, your child will be asked to complete the Panorama Student Perception Survey and respond to topics related to their classroom and whole school experiences. Results from the survey will be used as one form of data for teachers to reflect on as part of the Core Professionalism component of the Educator Effectiveness System. The survey is available for review on the Department’s website: https://www.hawaiipublicschools.org/TeachingAndLearning/EducatorEffectiveness/EducatorEffectivenessSystem/Pages/Panorama.aspx

Individual student answers are confidential and will not be tracked. To maintain confidentiality, online survey responses are transmitted directly to the same survey company for processing. Summarized student-response data are reported to the Department’s state and complex area leadership teams, principals, and teachers to help improve educational practices. Individual responses are not reported.

The Panorama Student Surveys were developed under the leadership of Dr. Hunter Gehlbach, Professor and Vice Dean at the John Hopkin’s University School of Education, and Director of Research at Panorama Education. Dr. Gehlbach and his research team at the Harvard Graduate School of Education followed a rigorous survey development process consisting of literature reviews, focus groups, feedback from experts around the country, cognitive interviews with students, and multiple rounds of piloting and refining.

Both surveys are voluntary; however, your child’s views are important to ensure a quality educational system. If your child does not feel they have enough information to answer a question, they may skip the item altogether. Each survey should not take more than 20-30 minutes to complete. We ask for your assistance in encouraging your child to participate and respond honestly to the survey questions. No further action is required from you unless you do not want your child to complete the survey.

To request that your child be exempted from completing the surveys, please fill in the attached Student Survey Declination Form. Click here to access the declination form and this letter. Check the “My child WILL NOT participate in the Panorama Student SEL Survey” and/or the “My child WILL NOT participate in the Panorama Student Perception Survey” box, fill in the requested information, sign the form, and submit the form to your child’s school. Forms must be submitted to the school by the date listed on the attached Student Survey Declination Form. Declination forms are due by Friday, August 23, 2024

We thank you for your cooperation and support. Should you have any questions about the SEL Survey, please call the Department’s Student Services Branch, Student Support Section at (808) 305-9800.
