24-25 Traffic, Safety and Logistics Reminders

Here are some traffic, safety, and logistics reminders for all Hilo High School families:

1 - Waianuenue Avenue is converted to a One-Way Traffic Pattern from 7:15am through 8:00am on all school days.  The direction of travel is temporarily changed to flow in the North-Easterly direction (toward Hilo Bay) beginning at Komohana Street and ending at Kamehameha Avenue.  The parking stalls on either side of Waianuenue Avenue are also used as traffic lanes, creating 4 total lanes of traffic.  The furthest-left lane should be utilized to make a left turn into our school campus during the one way pattern.

2 - When coming to campus for drop off, students should be seated on the right side of the vehicle and be ready to disembark from the vehicle at the designated pickup and drop off areas.  This means that all backpacks, bags, water bottles, and Student ID cards are with the student prior to entering the drop off areas.  Students who are being dropped off should not be the driver of the vehicle. This is in effort to keep traffic flowing smoothly and to ensure safety for all.

3 - Once in the parking lot of our school, vehicles must traverse the roadways with extreme caution and observe all traffic directions.  Students should not be dropped off along the main entrance roadway at any time.  All drop-offs must occur along the bus ramp which runs parallel to Waianuenue Avenue, or along the ramp below the cafeteria.

An HHS security attendant is posted at the security checkpoint, at which the roadway is divided into 2 lanes, pickup/drop-off (right) and parking (left).  Drivers are asked to pull as far ahead forward, toward the cafeteria in the pickup/drop-off lane before students open their doors to exit the vehicle.  No one should exit vehicles until they are well within the designated pickup/drop off lane.

4 - If you are coming to campus for an in-person meeting or appointment and must park your vehicle, you should remain in the left lane (parking lane) which is designated for those who will be parking in the main lot.  Non-ADA Visitor Parking for our entire school is located along the fence-line that borders Waianuenue Avenue.  For ADA Accessible stalls, please notify the security attendant at the security checkpoint so they can direct you to the appropriate area.

5 - Breakfast (1 free per student) is available at the school cafeteria from 7:10am through 7:55am for all students. Meals must be picked up at the cafeteria.

6 - Appropriate and acceptable face masks are optional while on school campus.

7 - Once school has started for the day, all vehicles that enter the school campus will be stopped and the driver will be identified at the security checkpoint.  Entry to the campus will not be allowed unless the visitor has an authorized and verifiable purpose to be on campus, and has proper photo identification available upon request.  Hilo High School utilizes Envoy Visitor Management system to track all visitors who come to campus for in-person meetings, etc.  Unverifiable persons, or anyone who refuses to state their purpose and identity will be directed to leave immediately, with the possibility of police intervention as necessary.

Deliveries and drop-offs of any meals, flowers, or any non-essential item for students are not permitted. All delivery services that arrive at school will be denied campus entry, and the driver will be asked to leave campus.  This includes paid services such as pizza deliveries, Uber Eats, DoorDash, Express Waiters, Etc.

Hilo High School will not be responsible for any associated fees for denied deliveries.
