Also, this past Saturday, members of the Hilo High Speech and Debate club were invited to participate in the “EDITH KA NA KA’OLE” HAWAI’I ISLAND DEBATE TOURNAMENT which was hosted at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and included multiple teams from the hosting university and HPU (Hawaii Pacific University). Three members of our Hilo High club, Mayo Nakajima, Keoni Randolph, and James Marshall, decided to form a team and enter. This college-level competition featured Parliamentary Debate, a form of debate our club students had not tried before.
Our Hilo High team made it all the way to the Finals, where they ended up taking 2nd place. In addition, each of the 3 team members placed individually in the top 10 of best speakers at the tournament. Congratulations Mayo, Keoni, and James!
