LTP: Welcome Back Students from Principal De Mello

Aloha Hilo High School ʻOhana,

It is with great humility and gratitude that I introduce myself as your new Principal. I am blessed to have the opportunity to serve this proud school and honored to be part of a community that cares deeply about its students, traditions, and future.

I want to sincerely thank Ms. Jasmine Okada for her leadership and dedication. She has helped build a strong foundation here at Hilo High, and I’m committed to listening, learning, and continuing that work together with care and respect for all that’s come before.

Though this is my first year on campus, I’ve been fortunate to serve our community over the past fifteen years at Waiākea High School, as both a science teacher and a vice principal. Those experiences have reinforced my core belief that schools thrive when relationships come first, and when everyone feels seen, supported, and empowered to grow.

As the new school year begins, I’m filled with both optimism and a sense of responsibility to uphold the standards of excellence expected from a Viking. I am excited to meet our students, partner with families, and support the incredible work being done by our staff. I know I have a lot to learn, and I am committed to learning alongside our students, staff, families, and community partners. I want to earn your trust through my actions, listening to our families, and by keeping students at the heart of every decision.

Vikings: I look forward to your continued growth and being part of your high school journey. To our families, I welcome your support, ideas, and involvement. And to the broader community: I am grateful for the opportunity to join you in supporting our next generation of Vikings. My door is open, and I genuinely want to hear your ideas, concerns, and hopes for the future. Strong schools are built on strong relationships, and I’m committed to building those with all of you.

It is a privilege to serve this school and community as your principal. Let’s make this a year filled with connection, growth, and Viking pride.  As I was told… Once a Viking, Always A Viking!!!

With Viking Pride,

Mr. Adrian De Mello
Principal, Hilo High School
