On Friday, December 5, 2025, the Hawaii State Department of Education Superintendent Keith T. Hayashi, his Chief of Staff Camille Masutomi, and Hilo-Waiakea Complex Area Superintendent Kasie Kaleohano visited Hilo High School and Waiakea High School.
Starting his visit at Hilo High School, the Hawaiian Dance class, also known as Na Liko Lehua o Hilo Hanakahi greeted the visitors with a welcome 'oli and an 'auana performance. Superintendent Hayashi mentioned that it was a, "chicken skin" moment to be greeted in such a way.
After speaking with the performers and a brief tour of the newly renovated Learning Resource Center, a meeting with Hilo High Administrators and Curriculum focused teachers were held. Soon after, Student Ambassadors shared what they currently enjoy at Hilo High School, and also shared the challenges and opinions of improvements with the Superintendent.
Superintendent Hayashi evaluated the status of the peeling walls in A-Building, then left for his next meeting at Waiakea High School.
We were greatly honored for the visit, and we hope that all those present were able to have meaningful takeaways to better our school and community!
